Attending your first Practice.

New paddlers are welcome to join us anytime to “test the waters”  at the Tempe Town Lake and it’s FREE for your first month you are in the boat! Come see if dragon boating is a sport for you. After you get hooked, you can join the organization and boat as often as you want. Our membership fees cover insurance, water time, docking, storage, equipment and much more – all wrapped into 1 convenient annual fee.

Steps to attend your first practice include:

  1. Check our schedule for the next practice.

  2. Fill out the AZDBA Guest Waiver form here.

    1. Membership Type: Guest

    2. Deciding: Deciding/Arizona Dragon Riders

    3. Payment Option: Guest or Youth

  3. Add your name to the event on our meetup.com/arizona-dragon-riders page.

  4. Arrive on time! If your are a first-time dragon boater, please arrive 15 minutes early for land training. This is very important to learn commands before you get on the water.

WHERE to Meet

We practice at the Tempe Town Lake Marina, Tempe, AZ. There should be plenty of parking spaces in the area. Once you’ve arrived, head to the gate where a coach or captain will wait for you. If you’ve arrived after the scheduled start time, the boat may already be by the boat launch (see image below) in which case you’ll head over there to find the team.

FAQs

  • Paddles and Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) will be provided. If you do have your own dragon boating paddle and/or PFD, you are welcome to bring them to practice.

  • Absolutely not! Any new paddlers are always welcome on the AZ Dragon Riders boat.

  • Practices are typically 2 hours long. This includes about 30 minutes of docking and undocking/rinsing the boat. For first time paddlers, we do ask you arrive an extra 15 minutes early for land training as well.
